NYU Urban Design in London Summer
England
Term: Summer
Description:
Since architecture is by definition three-dimensional and site specific, experiencing it first hand is a must. This course introduces students to the history of Britain's abundant architectural traditions, while at the same time addressing issues such as the preservation and presentation of an architectural heritage, infrastructure, transportation, adaptive re-use, ecological concerns and other topics related to urban planning and architectural practice. Visiting sites as diverse as Stonehenge, the City of Brighton, public housing in London, and Salisbury Cathedral, to name only a few, gives a range of experience with a wide variety of building types encompassing domestic, governmental and religious needs and uses. Contemporary British architecture and urban issues are engaged within the context of history and tradition. The course is intensive and involves daily trips over a three-week period throughout London and its environs.
