At NYU in Ghana, students experience firsthand the diversity and complexity of West Africa. In virtually every field of study, students find courses that challenge and inform, question and reveal. The academic program in Ghana is unique among our sites because students take courses at the NYU Center and may also enroll directly in local universities for part of their course work. Most students at NYU in Ghana will complete half of their course work at the NYU Center, studying with NYU professors or Ghanaian scholars teaching within the NYU program. Courses foucus on four main subject areas: Film, Literature, and Culture; Journalism, Communications, and the Media; the Social Sciences; and History. Students take the rest of their course work at the University of Ghana-Legon and at Ashesi University. Widely recognized as one of the top institutions of higher education in West Africa, the University of Ghana-Legon is the countrys flagship university. Hundreds of courses and a full range of academic programs are available, with particular strengths in Africana studies, the social sciences, and the performing arts. Ashesi University, a small, private university that is rapidly reshaping the landscape of higher education in Ghana, offers programs in computer science, business, and Africana studies.
Highlights:
The program at NYU in Ghana fosters academic and personal growth by using the city as a laboratory. Within Accra, students take part in the rich local culture by visiting the national theatre, various museums, and historical landmarks. Students have the opportunity to participate in cocurricular programming. Volunteer and community service opportunities are also available through relationships established with a number of organizations, including Amnesty International, the Ark Foundation, the National Museum, the National Theatre, and the West Africa AIDS Foundation. Trips outside of Accra may include Cape Coast and Elmina, former centers of the slave trade, now World Heritage Sites; Kumasi, the center of Ashanti history; the Volta River; Mole National Park; and Bomfobiri Wildlife Sanctuary.

Applicants to NYU study abroad programs are generally registered at an accredited college or university in the United States. Students who participate in study abroad programs have completed their freshman year of study and have attained a GPA of at least 3.0.
