Nursing in Northern Europe: DIS in cooperation with Copenhagen School of Nursing offers an innovative six-week, six-credit summer program for academically strong American and Danish nursing students. Taught in English, this intensive six-week program will focus on the socio-political context and clinical ways in which nursing is practiced in Scandinavia. The program will be based on theory and clinical practice and consist of the following three elements: Theory and practice of health care systems and the nursing profession in Northern Europe. Clinical practice, organized as observational and reflective studies, supervised and guided by clinical preceptors in different areas of nursing individually chosen before departure. Field studies to representative centers of nursing in Denmark and Scandinavia, integrated with course theory.
Highlights:
Program Objectives: The program aims at providing an understanding of the complexity of health, nursing and patient care problems in Scandinavia; a comparative understanding of American and Scandinavian health care and nursing systems; the opportunity to further develop academically in the chosen area of clinical nursing; enhanced analytical skills; broad intercultural competence. Classes are conducted at Copenhagen School of Nursing, Denmark's largest and most prestigious nursing school. The school is an integral part of the National University Hospital (Rigshospitalet), Bispebjerg Hospital, and Hvidovre Hospital, three highly specialized hospitals in Copenhagen. The clinical facilities at Copenhagen School of Nursing offer many intensive patient cases and a high level of specialization. It pays great attention to information technology and internationalization, and has entered into a series of international relationships that provide opportunities for international exchanges of students and faculty. Credits: The program carries six credits in total, four credits theory (approx. 60 hours) and two credits clinical practice (approx. 80 hours). Academic Resources: Students will have full access to the National Science and Medical Library, which is part of the Rigshospitalet complex, as well as to computers with internet access at Copenhagen School of Nursing and at DIS.
