AustraLearn and University of Newcastle
Australia
- New South Wales:
Newcastle
Term: Academic Year, Fall, Spring
Dates: February and/or July
Description:
The University of Newcastle offers students the perfect combination of lifestyle and learning. The challenge of adjusting to the new academic and social environment is assisted by the friendly and open welcome given to international students by the staff of the International Office, by the Australian students and by the Academics. The Callaghan campus has one of the best campuses in Australia. Its 500 acres of natural bushland - complete with Australian wildlife - at the city edge affords you the peace and quiet necessary for successful study. Newcastle is a down-to-earth Australian city. It combines a country setting with the advantages of city living. A lively port city on a breathtaking stretch of Australia coastline, Newcastle boasts wonderful beaches, a low cost of living, a very favorable climate and a casual lifestyle (and it is not far from Sydney, the capital of New South Wales). The University boasts exceptional sporting facilities including the Forum Sports & Aquatic Centre. The Forum features an 8 lane, heated indoor Olympic swimming pool, Australia's second highest rock climbing wall (18 meter), a dedicated circuit room, 22 station electronic cardio theatre, aerobic studio and martial arts/ dance studio with fully-sprung floors and a large fully equipped gymnasium. The Sports Union offers a variety of recreational and sporting activities from belly dancing, mountaineering and snow skiing to archery, fencing and the martial arts. Squash, badminton, tennis, basketball, volleyball, soccer and football facilities are available, as well as off-campus access to golf, surfing, waterskiing and other sports.
Highlights:
Newcastle has all the usual city attractions, such as restaurants, cafes, parks and gardens, theatres, art galleries, shopping centers and nightclubs. The city and region are also popular tourist destinations. A few kilometers south of the city is Australia's largest seaboard lake, Lake Macquarie, scene of many national and international sailing events. Less than an hour's drive to the north is the magnificent harbor of Port Stephens, a popular center for big game fishing and sailing, surfing and sailboarding. And to the west are the internationally famous wineries of the Hunter Valley. Central to student life is the University Union. The Union organizes many of the University's important cultural and social events like the Orientation Ball, the Beach Party, Big Wednesday and Cultural Awakenings Week. It also regularly hosts national and international bands at the Bar-On-The-Hill.
