Northwestern University Summer in Croatia
Croatia
Term: Summer
Description:
One of the most beautiful cities in the world, the Renaissance city of Dubrovnick (first two weeks of program) is a UNESCO World Heritage site nestled on the pristine Adriatic Sea. It boasts treasures such as 12th-century fortification walls, and 17th century stone houses, as well vibrant cafes and discos, peaceful monasteries, magnificent churches, and palm trees. The Dalmatian jewel of Split (final three weeks of program) is a perfect jumping off point to the more than one thousand verdant islands that dot the Adriatic. Its vitality springs from more than 2,000 years of history, including its heart, the Diocletian palace, built at the end of the 3rd century. The Balkans: Kosovo, Montenegro and Sarajevo (third week of program) are at the crossroads of Europe where over the centuries a wide variety of peoples, cultures, and religions have co-existed. We'll visit these important sites to gauge the post-conflict rebuilding efforts and hear first-hand perspectives about what happened during Yugoslavia's break-up and why.
Highlights:
Students will participate in a week-long excursion to the historic towns of coastal Montenegro, the important Serbian Orthodox Monasteries in Kosovo, and will engage in meetings with local and international community representatives who are rebuilding Kosovo (Prizren and Pristine), Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. Additional excursions include guided tours of Dubrovnick and Split, a day-long excursion the island of Mljet (a national park), and a weekend excursion to the island of Vis to see Dalmatia's maritime lore first-hand. Students will also visit many museums and cultural institutions in Dubrovnick and Split.
