New York University in Prague
Czech Republic
Term: Academic Year, Fall, Spring
Dates: Fall (Sep - Dec) Spr (Jan - May)
Description:
Prague resonates with the culture of Europe, past and present. Home to writers, artists, and musicians such as Kafka, Mucha, Kundera, Mozart, Dvorak, and Smetana, Prague has many cafes, art galleries, music festivals, and theatres that draw international performances and audiences. The NYU Center in Prague is housed in 15th-century site only steps from the Old Town Square. Here in the heart of the city can be found some of the finest examples of Prague's architectural accomplishments, combining Gothic, Renaissance, and baroque with art nouveau styles. Students in the NYU program live and study in this exhilarating setting. Our program aims to expose students to the historical, political, social, and cultural heritage of the Czech Republic; to help students understand its role in a changing Europe; and to appreciate the complex economic and political issues influencing the relationship between Eastern and Western Europe. Content courses are taught in English. Students also have the opportunity to take Czech, German, Polish, or Russian language courses while pursuing a rich liberal arts curriculum.
Highlights:
Internships are available to students in the NYU in Prague program. A full-time student affairs staff plans a number of activities for students to become familiar with their new environment in their first few weeks. Students visit and observe such institutions as the Czech Parliament, the Foreign Ministry, and Radio Free Europe in order to experience firsthand life after the famous Velvet Revolution, led by President Vaclav Havel. Several field trips are also organized each semester so students can explore the historic countryside. Outside of Prague, in nearby villages and towns, students discover the medieval architecture and musical heritage of Bohemia and Moravia. Students travel to medieval cities such as Cesky Krumlov, to the historic spa known as Karlovy Vary, and to the vineyards and farms of the region. In addition, weekend excursions may be organized to cities such as Budapest and Berlin. Most trips and events are covered by tuition.
