interstudy: University of Warwick
England
Term: Academic Year, Fall, Spring
Dates: Middle September - Early December / Early January - Middle June
Description:
Warwick is a relatively young University with a reputation for success. Since it was founded in 1964, it has developed a distinctive style, which marks it out as forward-looking, dynamic and responsive, resulting in Warwick's consistent ranking amongst the top ten British Universities. Its current position is within the top six for both teaching and research. An ongoing expansion program has enriched the social, cultural and academic facilities of the campus, which include the largest arts center in the UK outside of London, containing an excellent concert hall and film theater, superb student residences, together with teaching and research buildings. The University is also a genuinely international community, with around 2,500 students from outside the UK representing more than 100 countries The University of Warwick is situated on a 750-acre campus on the southern side of Coventry where the City meets the county of Warwickshire. Fields and woodland border one side of the University, whilst on the other there is a modern residential district that incorporates a convenient shopping center. The campus itself combines a green environment, which includes woods, lakes and a nature reserve, with a lively student social life and excellent student facilities. Despite all the activity, many of the residences have landscaped views and it is easy to take a peaceful walk either on the quieter parts of campus or in the surrounding countryside. The campus has its own post office, bookshop, pharmacy, newsagent, hairdresser, restaurants, snack bars, supermarket, branches of three of the four major British banks, chaplaincy, sports center and health center. All the facilities are only a short walk from each other, making campus life very convenient and resulting in a strong sense of student community. A regular bus service links the campus to the center of Coventry and other nearby towns. The location of the University gives the advantages of both city and countryside. The center of the City of Coventry (population approximately 330,000) has a large traffic-free shopping precinct, an art gallery, museums, cinemas, a theater and sports center. Coventry is best known for its impressive modern cathedral designed by Sir Basil Spence, and for the Lady Godiva legend. However, the city has had a rich and varied history dating back to medieval times and the Roman invasion. To the south of the University lies the attractive scenery of Warwickshire, Shakespeare's country. Stratford upon Avon, birthplace of William Shakespeare and home of the Royal Shakespeare Company, is only twelve miles from campus. The University's central location in the heart of England means that access to the rest of the country is easy. The express railway system provides a half-hourly service covering the 90 miles between London and Coventry in only 75 minutes. The city is also well served by the national coach network. Travel services within the UK and worldwide can be booked through a travel agent that is based in the Students' Union. interstudy students are enrolled in classes which are offered as part of the University's regular degree programs, and they participate fully in lectures, seminars, tutorials and practical classes with full-time British undergraduate students.
