interstudy: Queen Mary, University of London
England
Term: Academic Year, Fall, Spring
Dates: Middle September - Middle December / Early January - Early June
Description:
Queen Mary has a combined undergraduate and graduate student body of over 8,000, spread across Faculties of Art, Engineering and Mathematical Sciences, Law and Social Sciences, Natural Sciences, and Medicine and Dentistry. Undergraduates follow degree courses of study leading to degrees of the University of London. Formerly two separate colleges within the University of London, Queen Mary, University of London (Mile End) and Westfield College (Hampstead) merged in 1989 and are now located on one campus, at Mile End. This is the eastern side of Central London, about two miles from St Paul's Cathedral and the Tower of London. There is easy access to these, and the myriad attractions of London - social, cultural, historic and academic - since the College is within a few minutes walk of two Underground (subway) stations and on major bus routes. The London Underground network connects with the main railway terminals and bus stations, giving access to all parts of Great Britain, the ferry ports for Continental Europe and Ireland, and to the airports of Gatwick, Heathrow, Luton, Stansted and City. The main campus building is an imposing white stone edifice dating from 1887, but the sixteen-acre site now consists mainly of modern, purpose-built buildings which, besides housing the five faculties and administrative offices, also include the Great Hall, a new library, the Informatics Teaching Laboratory, three restaurants, a cafe-bar, bank, bookshop, health center and the student union building. Students enjoy exploring the eclectic East End of London, away from the center of "tourist" London, with its street markets, riverside pubs, local parks, theaters and art galleries. The campus is bordered on the east by Regent's Canal, with its towpath leading north to Victoria Park and by the new Millennium Park. To the south, redevelopment has turned the old London Docks into thriving new business and residential communities, served by a light railway and the City Airport, which gives direct air access to such cities as Brussels, Amsterdam, Paris, Rotterdam and Dublin. A large section of land adjacent to campus will also be the site of the Olympic Village for the upcoming 2012 Olympics in London.
