interstudy: Kings College - London
England
Term: Academic Year, Fall, Spring
Dates: Middle September - Middle December / Early January - Early June
Description:
Kings College London was one of two London colleges established over a century and a half ago to challenge the supremacy of Oxford and Cambridge in British higher education. It was created by the Royal Charter of King George IV in 1829; teaching commenced in 1831. Kings College London is now a constituent college of the University of London, which with over 40,000 students is Britain's largest university. The College has been home for many famous names; Lister (the inventor of antiseptic surgery), Lyall (the founder of modern geology) and Wheatstone (electric currents) were among the best known members of staff in the 19th Century; and two Nobel prize winners, Maurice Wilkins (for his work on DNA) and James Black (for beta-blockers) carry on this tradition for pioneering research into the present day. Kings now has a student population of 19,200. Undergraduate teaching and research is carried out in nine schools; Biomedical Sciences, Dentistry, Health and Life Sciences, Humanities, Law, Medicine, Nursing and Midwifery, Physical Sciences and Engineering, and Social Science and Public Policy. A GBP 300 million redevelopment program has transformed Kings. In addition to new state-of-the-art teaching and research facilities at the Waterloo and London Bridge campuses, Kings have converted the former Public Records Office in Chancery Lane into one of London's finest library buildings. The College spans three campuses. The Strand Campus, where the Humanities, Physical Sciences and Engineering are taught, is very near Covent Garden and Trafalgar Square. The Students Union building also enjoys uninterrupted river views of the Houses of Parliament to the west and the Tower Bridge to the east. The National Gallery, the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden and St. Paul's Cathedral are all within five minutes walk of the Strand. Guys Campus at London Bridge, where the Biomedical Sciences are taught, is located close to Shakespeare's Globe Theatre and the new Tate Gallery of Modern Art. The Waterloo Campus, where Health and Life Sciences are taught, is next to the South Bank Centre, home of the National Theatre, the National Film Theatre, the Royal Festival Hall and the Hayward Gallery. interstudy students are integrated into the Colleges degree courses for the Fall, Spring or Full-Year, and take classes with British students. The majority of classes are small, with considerable emphasis placed on tutorial and seminar teaching.
