Description: Lakeland College offers exciting opportunities at our branch campus in vibrant central Tokyo. Attend classes in our fully-accredited program taught in English, alongside Japanese students. Students may transfer credits earned at Lakeland College Japan to their home campuses. Small class sizes are maintained. Highly supportive professional faculty and staff. Of particular interest to participants in the Study Abroad program are our courses in Japanese and in Asian Area Studies. Lakeland College Japan is an ideal place for students to begin their studies of the Japanese language, or to begin their exploration of Japan and the Far East as a possible area of academic, professional, or personal interest. Financial aid may be available to undergraduate U.S. domestic students. Lakeland College Japan Study Abroad students will have many opportunities to see Japan and experience the exotic sites and attractions the country has to offer. Lakeland College Japan is located in central Tokyo, an exciting metropolitan area, which offers easily accessible, world-class public transportation.

Japanese Language Instruction: Program participants are encouraged to enroll in a credit-bearing Japanese language course. This course is taught by a native speaker of Japanese and is designed to help students make the most of the opportunities to learn Japanese while living in Tokyo. Tutoring is also available to help students meet the requirements of this course.

General Studies and Other Courses: Lakeland College Japan offers a liberal arts curriculum that allows students to meet a variety of course requirements while participating in the program. Of special interest to overseas students is our Asian Studies curriculum. These courses are offered on a rotating basis, and allow students to focus their studies on East Asia while living in Japan.

* Introduction to Philosophy

Students planning to take a full course load should take three courses in addition to Japanese. Prospective Study Abroad program students should consult with their academic advisor (at their home campus) to ensure course selections are compatible with their degree requirements. Although Lakeland College Japan offers a fully accredited program, students should confirm transferability of individual courses to their home campus degree program in advance of enrollment. The following suggestions may assist students and their advisors in selecting courses:
* Course 1 Elementary Japanese
* Course 2 Asian studies elective (US-Japan Relations, Pacific Rim Economies, Asian History)
* Courses 3 and 4 Any two of the following: (a) World's Living Religions,(b) Social Science elective (Anthropology, Psychology, Macroeconomics, Microeconomics, Sociology, Understandings of Government); (c) Humanities elective (Humanities I, Philosophy, Literature).

Highlights: Study Abroad program students are responsible for scheduling round-trip air transportation. Students should allow 3 months processing time for required travel documentation. Lakeland College will provide support and assistance as desired for these processes.

In-Country Program Support: Pre-departure orientation is provided. Additionally, an orientation program is held at the beginning of each semester to welcome non-Japanese students and provide them with relevant information on life in Tokyo and at Lakeland College Japan. Topics during Orientation include:
* Academic requirements
* Communications (phone, e-mail, and post) within Japan and the U.S.
* In-country travel, leisure, and other recreational opportunities
* Tips on shopping and daily life support
* Cultural and language issues
* In-country medical and dental services
* Housing
* In-country transportation
* Personal finances (e.g. currency, banking, use of credit cards, etc.)
* Geographical orientation of Tokyo area and Japan in general.
* Japanese Government law and regulations (e.g. remaining in-status on visa, customs exemptions, applicable International and local taxes, etc.)
* Personal and property safety and security considerations

Housing: Lakeland College will offer students the option of residing with a Japanese host family or, if desired, residence in an approved international student dormitory.
