AIFS Study Abroad in St. Petersburg, Russia
Russia
- St. Petersburg:
St. Petersburg
Term: Academic Year, Fall, Spring
Dates: August - May (Academic Year), August - December (Fall Semester), January - May (Spring Semester)
Description:
St. Petersburg is the most European of Russian cities. Founded by Peter the Great in 1703 as Russia's Window to the West, it still retains many of the Baroque splendors of the former empire, more bridges than Venice and a fairytale atmosphere of gold-domed churches, elaborate palaces and riverside parks. You can see one of the greatest art collections in the world at the Hermitage, watch world-famous ballet companies perform classic and contemporary works, or explore the thriving music scene that includes rock, jazz, classical, and everything in between. AIFS students take courses taught in English and Russian in art history, history, literature, political science, religion, sociology, and Russian language at St. Petersburg State Polytechnic University. AIFS program fees include the basics and the extras: tuition housing, a meal allowance, London visit, excursions and cultural activities, airfare if selected, trips to Moscow and Helsinki, and more.
Highlights:
AIFS in St. Petersburg has something for everyone. Whether you want to see a world-famous ballet, visit the Hermitage museum or learn Russian, the University and surrounding city has much to offer. Excursions to London and Moscow are included in the program fees, and many day trips are offered to students. Students find time to balance their course work with leisure time. Students have the choice of living in University residence halls or with a Russian family. A public transportation pass is included in the program fee for easy accessibility across St. Petersburg. The Resident Director organizes a variety of activities, which usually include: a visit to Russian, Dostoevsky and Hermitage museums and Pavlovsk and Yusupov Palaces; a day trip to Vyborg; a classical concert at Philharmonic Hall; an opera at Mussorgsky Theater and Hermitage Theater; a party with Russian students; dinner at a Georgian restaurant; a Russian film and Chekhov play; ice skating and a hockey match; a visit to a Russian banya (bath house) and the St. Petersburg circus.
