CIEE Arts and Sciences Program at Westminster in London, England

  England
  • London:
  • London

Term: Academic Year, Fall, Spring
Dates: Fall 14 weeks: early Oct-mid-Dec; Spring 19 weeks: early Jan-early June; Academic Year 36 weeks: early Oct-early June

Description: The Arts and Sciences program at the CIEE Study Center at the University of Westminster has two main goals: to provide a rigorous and creative academic experience in London, and to provide a critical, in-depth appreciation of London. These goals are achieved by offering courses through direct enrollment and planned activities coordinated by CIEE. Integration with students at the University of Westminster creates opportunities to become participants in the economic and intellectual life of perhaps the most dynamic and diverse city in Europe.

Academic Program
The Arts and Sciences program at the University of Westminster opened in 2000 and is designed for students who are highly motivated, think creatively, and look forward to living in a different culture. The program is designed for students who enjoy practical learning and are particularly interested in media, communications, business, and related fields. CIEE students may register for all courses for which they meet the prerequisites. In addition, an internship option is available through the University of Westminster. Cross registration among CIEE host institutions is not possible.

Academic Culture
CIEE participants may notice a striking difference between the educational system in the United States and Britain. The English educational system allows students greater responsibility and initiative in a less structured environment. The system is geared towards students who are motivated, self-sufficient, and fully interested in experiencing the British education system. To aid in this transition, the CIEE London Academic Advisor covers these academic differences during orientation and is available throughout the semester.

Learning takes place through a coherent blend of lectures, group seminars, and practical work. The tutorial system ensures academic support for all students, and regular student feedback helps to monitor quality.

Highlights:

  • Ideal for students interested in business, technology, communications, design, and media; for-credit internship option available
  • Quality learning and research designed in partnership with businesses to meet the needs of London's international economy
  • Highly respected media, arts, and design department with state-of-the-art facilities including professional studios for radio, television, and arts
  • Residences are located in prime areas across London

Culture
Cultural Activities and Field Trips
CIEE excursions help students explore all aspects of contemporary London during their stay, including trips to museums, sporting events, concerts, and the theater. Each semester also includes a weekend trip out of the country. Past participants visited Scotland, Ireland, Wales, or France.

University Life
Students at the University of Westminster are part of the Student Union and are entitled to use any of its facilities at each academic center. Students can become involved with the Union through its extensive range of clubs and societies. The Health and Fitness Centre in the Regent Street building has cardiovascular, resistance, and free weight equipment. A variety of fitness classes are offered from aerobics to kick-boxing to yoga. A wide range of sports and clubs are also available to students.
