CIEE Summer Field Seminar in Transylvania, Hungary and Romania
Hungary
Term: Summer
Dates: 3 weeks: late June-mid July
Description:
The goal of the Transylvania Field Seminar is to provide students with a firsthand experience of coexisting traditional cultures trying to meet the challenges of the 21st century. The program exposes students to the unique history, religious life, and folk art of multiethnic Transylvania through its architecture, cultural heritage, and traditional customs. Students will be able to discuss critical periods of Transylvanian history; identify major geographical regions and religions of Transylvania; and discuss major ethnic groups of Transylvania. Academic Program This dynamic academic program exposes students to the distinct sub-regions of Transylvania through a series of lectures, discussions, and cultural experiences. By participating in this academic seminar, students learn firsthand about the Land of the Szekely (Sekler), Kalotaszeg (Hungarian), and Saxon (German) territories while gaining insight into various aspects of Romanian culture throughout Transylvania. The program is designed for students with a keen interest in European history, ethnic minorities, religion, and the evolution of multiethnic societies. The program begins and ends in Budapest, Hungary. Academic Culture This is a traveling seminar where lectures, presentations, and discussions are held both in classroom settings and in situ. Students should expect limited individual free time. Although the daily schedule is quite varied, many days include morning lectures and discussions, afternoon site visits, and additional late afternoon or evening lectures. The learning process continues with discussions in the evening, as students and staff typically stay together in local inns or with host families throughout the region.
Highlights:
- Travel through mountain villages, valleys, and forests staying with local families and learning about one of Europe's most ethnically diverse regions
- Enjoy three weeks of instruction, with an intensive program of lectures, site visits, and daily excursions
- Gain first-hand knowledge about the culture and history of Transylvania
- Appropriate for students with various academic interests, including history, sociology, political science, religion, and ethnic studies
Culture Cultural Activities and Field Trips The Transylvania summer program involves a great deal of travel through mountain villages, valleys, and forests, and staying with local families. Students participate in daily lectures, site visits, and excursions. The program includes a significant amount of walking and hiking, so participants should be in good physical condition and enjoy the outdoors. See the course listing for a daily schedule.
