Description:
The goal of the Paris Contemporary French Studies summer program is to introduce students at all levels of French to the language and culture of France. This is accomplished through intensive French language courses at the beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels and content courses related to French literature, culture, film, and history, taught in both French and English. Academic Program Established in 2004, the Paris summer program is for students who want to improve their knowledge of French language and culture while learning about Paris and France through classes, activities, and excursions. Academic Culture The program is made up of two three-week sessions. Students may choose to participate in one or both. Courses typically meet every morning or afternoon for three hours, with occasional outings. All courses involve one obligatory weekend trip whose themes and destination are integrated into the class. The courses are designed for U.S. undergraduates and the teaching and learning methods will be familiar to them. All of the professors in the summer program are accustomed to teaching U.S. students. The French language classes are small and based on a large amount of individualized attention and exercises, as well as group work. Language courses are offered at three levels, beginning, intermediate, and advanced. Classes take place at the Center and are carried out entirely in French. Teachers arrange for outings in the city, to work on comprehension in day-to-day settings. The English and French-taught content classes are intellectually rigorous. Students should expect to be active participants in all aspects of the class, keeping up with daily reading assignments and participating in class discussions. Besides lectures and discussions, classes may include film viewings and outings related to the themes of the class.
