NYU in Madrid, founded in 1958, is the oldest NYU study abroad program. Over 6,000 undergraduate students from universities and colleges throughout the United States have studied Spanish language, literature, culture, art, anthropology, politics, and cinema at NYU in Madrid. Courses are taught by NYU faculty and Spanish university professors who are recognized experts in their fields. NYU in Madrid offers two complementary programs. Program I is designed for students with little or no Spanish; all courses except language courses are conducted in English. Program II is designed for students who have completed two or more courses beyond intermediate Spanish; all courses are conducted in Spanish.

NYU in Madrid students also enjoy a full range of cultural activities, seminars, and excursions designed to immerse them in Spanish culture. Experts in the history, art, and architecture of each particular destination lead all class excursions, and a full-time staff plans trips in and around Madrid. Students studying in Madrid explore a capital that is intricately linked to the literature, civilization, and culture courses in which they are enrolled. Famous for its nightlife and beauty, Madrid offers all the conveniences of a big city--gyms, cinemas, theatre, dance, concerts, and museums. Visits to Barcelona, Andalusia, Avila, the Basque Country, and Galicia are also possible, as well as day trips to nearby Toledo, Segovia, Salamanca, and the famous El Corral Renaissance theatre in Almagro.

Applicants to NYU study abroad programs are generally registered at an accredited college or university in the United States. Students who participate in study abroad programs have completed their freshman year of study and have attained a GPA of at least 3.0.
