New York University in Florence
Italy
Term: Academic Year, Fall, Spring
Dates: Fall (Sep - Dec) Spr (Jan - May)
Description:
New York University in Florence at La Pietra is situated on a hillside just north of the center of Florence. Sir Harold Acton, a distinguished patron of the arts, bequeathed the 57-acre estate to the University. Villa La Pietra, a magnificent 15th-century, 60-room, country home, contains a notable early Renaissance art collection. The villa is surrounded by several acres of historically significant gardens, rolling hills, and olive groves. There are four other villas at La Pietra: Natalia, Colletta, Sassetti, and Ulivi. NYU in Florence offers an exceptional academic program for undergraduate students during fall or spring semester as well as the full academic year. Most courses (except Italian language courses) are taught in English. In addition, some NYU content courses are offered in Italian to students proficient in the language. Approximately 300 undergraduates per semester study the history of Europe and its extraordinary cultural legacy of art literature, philosophy, and architecture; the political, cultural, economic, and social issues that are shaping the future of Europe; and intensive Italian at the beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels. Courses in business, film, photography, and studio art are also available. Classes are held at La Pietra and at nearby downtown locations. Language courses are taught at the Centro Linguistico di Ateneo of the University of Florence. Additional offerings for students with advanced Italian skills are offered at the University of Florence.
