MAPMES
Israel
Term: Academic Year, Throughout the year
Dates: Fall semester-October / Spring semester-February
Description:
MAPMES, The Masters of Arts Program in Middle East Studies, is a one-year-long program in English designed to train students in cross-disciplinary approaches to the study of the Middle East and North Africa. This program stands out from traditional area-studies programs. Not only does the program provide in-depth knowledge of the region but it also encourages students to engage in critical thinking and apply broad and flexible cultural perspectives to issues relevant to the region. Thus, students will have the necessary knowledge and skills to pursue individualized programs of study that incorporate work from more than one discipline, as well as accomplish creative and independent work. MAPMES is not limited to classroom seminars. During the semester breaks, the department organizes an intensive study-tour to a neighboring country, which in recent years has included travel to Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, and Turkey. Another feature of the program is the International Workshop on the Social and Cultural History of the Middle East.
Highlights:
One of the main strengths of the MAPMES program is the faculty. Over the years, the Middle East Studies department has been praised for producing innovative scholarship on the region. Virtually every member has a significant affiliation with another department or program at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev. The faculty also maintains close working ties with scholars from neighboring countries. Indeed, what makes MAPMES program particularly attractive is the number of international visiting scholars dedicated to the ideals underlying the MAPMES program.
