AIFS Study Abroad in Grenoble, Language and Culture Program

  France
  • Grenoble:
  • Grenoble

Term: Fall, Spring
Dates: Sept. 1-Dec. 20, 2008, Jan. 12-May 16, 2009

Description: The crystal-clear air and snow-capped mountains of the French Alps provide a picturesque setting in which to study. Grenoble is small enough to feel like a town but large enough to offer all the amenities of a busy city. Built on the banks of two alpine rivers, medieval buildings and cobbled streets give a romantic air to the older part of town, while museums, theaters, cultural festivals, cafés and bistros explain why Grenoble is the leading city in the region.

AIFS students take courses at the University of Grenoble School of Languages and Letters. The program concentrates on French language and culture and offers courses, taught in both English and French, in art history, business administration, economics, history, literature, and political science, plus French language. A year of college French is required to attend this program.

Fees include the basics and the extras: tuition, housing in a homestay, meals, cultural activities, excursions to Venice, Paris, and Provence, airfare if selected, services of an on-site Resident Director, and more.

AIFS Study Abroad in Grenoble, Language and Culture Program

Highlights: AIFS students live in homestays and receive breakfast and dinner, as well as meal vouchers for lunch at the University cafeteria. Cultural activities include walking tours of medieval Grenoble, a visit to the beautiful lake of Annecy, wine and cheese tastings, visits to the art museum, hikes, picnics, skiing, and a visit to the Chartreuse Monastery to taste the "elixir of life" from a recipe known to only three living monks. In the spring semester, the University ski club organizes ski excursions throughout the winter, including downhill and cross-country skiing. Students can also enroll in French cuisine and wine appreciation classes.

Students participate in a London stopover en route to Grenoble, and during the semester there are excursions to Provence, Venice, Paris, and Geneva.
