Established in 1964, La Trobe has approximately 22,000 students, including 1,700 international students. The student population at La Trobe is diverse in that it represents many cultural groups, a wide range of ages and various social and professional backgrounds. The university's International Programs Office provides a comprehensive orientation program for all international students. The orientation program gives students all the tools they need to settle in quickly and make the most of their time while at La Trobe and in Australia. It is also a great chance to meet local and international students. Additionally, CIS includes in its package the "Down Under" program at La Trobe University. During orientation week and throughout the semester, students are given opportunities to go to presentations, speakers, tastings, and films.

It is a beautiful city set amidst parks and gardens, and surrounded by endless stretches of beaches. Its unique diversity, vitality and ambience have helped position Melbourne as one of the world's great cities. There is easy public transport access to beaches, shopping districts, nightlife, places of interest, sporting stadiums, galleries, museums, tourist attractions, parks, gardens and historical icons. La Trobe University's buildings and facilities are among the best in Australia. The main library, Borchardt Library, is recognized as one of the leading university libraries in Australia, with more than one million volumes as well as sophisticated information technology. The computer facilities on campus give study abroad students access to free e-mail, computers labs (some with 24 hour access), modem connections for laptops and various other services. If you are interested in sports or outdoors activities you'll find something of interest to keep you fit and happy while studying at La Trobe. In 1997 the university was awarded the honor of hosting the Australian Universities Games, in part due to the university's outstanding facilities. La Trobe's sporting facilities include a heated swimming pool, gymnasium, tennis courts, basketball courts and extensive sports fields (for Aussie Rules, Soccer, Rugby, Hockey, Cricket etc.).
