Jordan: Modernization and Social Change
Jordan
Term: Fall, Spring
Dates: September-December/February-May
Description:
The School for International Training's Study Abroad programs offer field-based study in over 57 countries. Students earn 16 semester credits on a 15-week experience designed to encourage a global awareness that enables people to live in an interdependent world. Groups of seven to 25 students are led by one or two academic directors. Jordan is a nation at the crossroads of ancient traditions and modern development. Controlled by many empires over its 11,000-year history, this predominantly Muslim nation only gained independence in the twentieth century. With its strategic location and its reputation as a moderate Arab state, Jordan serves as a conduit of trade and communication in the region and beyond. While Jordan has made enormous strides recently in health care, literacy, and democratic and economic reform, it remains challenged by a lack of natural resources, environmental concerns, economic and social issues, and the impact of Palestinian immigrants and refugees, who now make up more than half of the nation's population. From your base in Amman and through excursions within Jordan, you gain firsthand insight into this modern Middle Eastern state coming to terms with political responsibility, social change, and the effects of regional conflict.
Highlights:
Sixteen undergraduate credits awarded including six credits of modern standard Arabic; Program base in Amman; Nine- to 13-week homestay in Amman; Educational Excursions to Ancient cities of Petra, Wadi Rum, Jerash, Aqaba, and the desert castles; Syria: Damascus, Aleppo, Hama; Four-week Independent Study Project.
