Morocco: Culture and Society
Morocco
Term: Fall, Spring
Dates: September to December/February to May
Description:
The School for International Training's Study Abroad programs offer field-based study in over 57 countries. Students earn 16 semester credits on a 15-week experience designed to encourage a global awareness that enables people to live in an interdependent world. Groups of seven to 25 students are led by one or two academic directors. Vibrant, diverse Morocco is known for its Atlantic and Mediterranean beaches, high mountains, Sahara Desert, imperial cities, and open-air souks. Its history and culture reflect the influence of a long succession of invaders and settlers--including the Carthaginians, Romans, Vandals, French, Spanish, and Arabs--as well as the presence of the Berbers, Morocco's indigenous people, who make up half of the nation's population. Morocco provides unique opportunities to examine Islam as a religion and a system of thought, to study the Moroccan political system and monarchy, and to investigate current development issues. From your base in the cosmopolitan capital of Rabat, you travel to the coastal and Saharan towns of Marrakech, Zagora, and Essaouira, as well as to rural Moroccan communities, gaining an in-depth understanding of this rich and rapidly changing society. Prerequisites: There are no prerequisites; however, students with a background in French will find ample opportunity for French language practice, while also learning Arabic.
Highlights:
Eight-week homestay in Rabat and a one-week rural village homestay. Educational excursions to Marrakech, Fes and Meknes, and the Zagora desert area.
