Botswana: Community-Based Natural Resource Management
Botswana
Term: Fall, Spring
Dates: September to December/ February to May
Description:
The Gain a balanced perspective on the long-term conservation goals and development needs of local populations in Botswana, one of Africa's last great wilderness areas. The Kalahari Desert covers nearly 70 percent of the country and has been home to the San peoples for thousands of years. This fragile ecosystem provides a dramatic example of ecological and human adaptation to an extreme climate. The Okavango Delta is a complex ecosystem of rivers, marshes, and islands with diverse wildlife that has been forced to adapt to cyclical changes in landscape and vegetation. The program base and homestay in Gaborone, combined with other rural homestays and Setswana language study, enable meaningful interaction with the people of Botswana. Excursions and field assignments in some of Africa's most important nature reserves combine with the independent study component to further understanding of Botswanas ecology and culture.
