Undergraduate Program in Central European Studies (UPCES)
Czech Republic
Term: Academic Year, Fall, Spring
Dates: Follows US Academic Calendar
Description:
At the Undergraduate Program in Central European Studies (UPCES), study abroad is an opportunity for cultural immersion and intellectual engagement which can offer a chance to see and understand the world from the viewpoint of a unique place and culture. This immersion is achieved via several paths. First, UPCES students have a unique opportunity to interact with students from other departments of Charles University. Alone among study-abroad programs in Prague, UPCES courses are cross-listed through the university's School of Humanities, so classes contain a mix of Czech, Western European and North American students. A typical UPCES seminar with a dozen participants has students from several nations, ensuring that our students take their courses in an international, multi-cultural environment. Second, the UPCES staff organizes several gatherings of Czech and other European students so that our students will have a chance to become personally acquainted with others from around the world. Third, UPCES students live in flats scattered throughout the center section of Prague. Students do not just get the chance to interact with Czechs, but the opportunity to live among them. Lastly, UPCES sponsors several trips for our students both inside and outside the Czech Republic. Czech and other European students are welcomed on these trips as well. Students from a wide variety of majors and interests can enjoy what UPCES has to offer. Prominent scholars from Charles University and the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic teach our courses in English. Courses include, but are not limited to, economics, international relations, sociology, history, political science, gender studies, literature, philosophy and Elementary Czech language.
