  • Berlin

Term: Fall, Spring, Summer
Dates: Fall (Sep - Dec), Spring (Jan - May)

Description: The NYU in Berlin program is based at the prestigious Humboldt University, located near the heart of the city on Unter den Linden. The program features NYU courses, taught by NYU faculty, members of the Humboldt faculty, and Berlin's wider academic community. The program is especially designed for students in social sciences, history, and German studies. Course offerings focus on the society, politics, history, and culture of Germany and contemporary Western Europe. Sociology majors and minors have the opportunity to get credit for up to three required courses in the department. All courses are taught in English with the exception of language courses.

Students are required to take a foundation course, Contemporary Germany in a United Europe, and choose from seminars and lecture courses in German studies, sociology, cultural studies, and European studies, with topics such as The Third Reich and the Holocaust, History and Culture of Berlin, Immigration and Multiculturalism in Today's Germany, and the European Union and Classical Social Theory. While in Berlin, all students also study German at the elementary or more advanced levels.

Highlights: Berlin offers innumerable cultural diversions, with attractions that range from contemporary art galleries to historic sites. Students visit the remaining memorial section of the wall that divided East from West Berlin or the impressive glass dome of the Reichstag, the seat of the German parliament, where new architecture complements a historic building.

Students never lack for things to do. There are three major opera houses; several of the world's best symphony orchestras, dozens of magnificent museums; a great zoo; three large universities; various academies of art and music; over 50 theatres; hundreds of movie houses; and many, many cafes, pubs, galleries, clubs, and discos. Numerous restaurants and outdoor markets reflect the city's broad ethnic mix.

Students are introduced to the rich cultural resources the city has to offer, including museums and castles, film screenings, guest lectures, and dramatic and musical performances. Students may enjoy walking tours and boat tours on Berlin's canals and lakes in a city that has more bridges than Venice. Excursions include day trips to the Sachsenhausen concentration camp, the historic palace city of Potsdam, and the nearby Babelsberg film studios.
